GTMConsumer‑Led Strategy Brand Repositioning

Adapting GTM Across New Markets with Deep Consumer Understanding

1/2

Context

Standard Bank, an African bank with European roots, had become South Africa’s largest financial institution. By 2011, it was actively pursuing expansion across Africa to capture growth in fast‑developing markets.

Problem

I was invited to the project after the company and agency had fallen far short of expansion goals, struggling to scale across the continent. The bank leadership was unsure why they were struggling to scale in other countries in Africa since they were using the same brand playbook, structure and high‑quality services offered in South Africa.

Approach

I led the strategic team to conduct multi‑country research across five African markets, gathering deep local consumer insights. The research revealed that replicating the South African structure and approach did not align with broader African banking culture, which relied heavily on trust‑based relationships and community engagement. We uncovered key barriers and developed a bold, data‑driven repositioning strategy that preserved brand consistency while integrating market‑specific adaptations. This included reshaping communication to reflect cultural values, redesigning branch structures and experiences to foster trust, and building community‑based engagement programs that extended directly into branch operations. Faced with clear evidence, the board embraced my recommendations.

Results

The repositioning put expansion back on track. Standard Bank grew from 600 to 800 branches, exceeded growth targets with a +35% increase in consumers, and delivered 40% incremental revenue growth (USD 3B). The transformation positioned Standard Bank as a leading financial player across Africa.
