Listening to Consumers, Winning with Emotion. Transforming consumer insights into emotional relevance that drove growth and restored leadership.

Context

The detergent market was highly competitive and commoditized, with all brands using the same functional messaging around stain removal and whiteness. There was no emotional connection.

Problem

Because the entire industry leaned on functional claims, detergents were seen as purely utilitarian commodities and lacking distinctiveness. Without a bold repositioning, brands would continue to erode in relevance and fail to build emotional connection with consumers.

Approach

Unilever listened to consumers through meaningful research that revealed two interconnected outcomes: . Parents balance protection with exploration: sometimes allowing kids to play freely, sometimes holding them back. . Unstructured play accelerates childhood development: climbing, running, and getting dirty foster creativity, resilience, and emotional wellbeing. By connecting these outcomes, we identified an insight to help parents see the benefit of allowing play without hesitation. Dirt was reframed into a positive metaphor, a symbol of growth and learning, and we launched the Dirt Is Good platform. This was not just a campaign, but a purpose‑driven repositioning that gave the brand cultural meaning and deep emotional resonance.

Results

The reframing transformed the entire category, elevating a commodity into a purpose‑driven brand with a strong emotional resonance among parents. By solving a real consumer tension, we unlocked massive growth. In the first year, the brand gained 20% share in Brazil ($172M) and 1.5% globally ($2.1B). Dirt Is Good became the world’s largest detergent brand, generating €4.3B in sales and reaching 120 purchases per second worldwide.
